The Seventh House: Partnership, Contracts, and the Other

The Seventh House: Partnership, Contracts, and the Other

Core meaning

The seventh house is the house of the face-to-face other. It describes partnerships, marriage, contracts, declared alliances, open conflict, negotiation, and the type of relationship through which a person meets something outside themselves in a direct and structured way.

It is opposite the first house. The first house describes the body, the Rising sign, the first impression one gives, and the immediate way a person enters life. The seventh house, or Descendant, describes what stands across from that: the other person, the partner, the mirror, the adversary, the one with whom a bond or confrontation must be formed.

The seventh house should therefore not be reduced to romance. It includes couples, but also business partners, legal contracts, clients, opponents, and any situation where the self must deal with another will on equal ground. It is the house of explicit relationship: not the vague social field, but the precise encounter between "me" and "you."

How to read it

The sign on the seventh house cusp describes the style of relationship a person tends to seek, provoke, or meet. Aries on the Descendant may bring direct, active, confrontational, or independent partners. Taurus may seek reliability, physical presence, loyalty, and stable agreements. Gemini may bring relationships based on language, mobility, curiosity, and mental exchange.

Planets in the seventh house are especially important because the seventh is an angular house. A planet here is often visible through relationships and can become part of how others experience the person. Venus in the seventh house may make charm, harmony, attraction, and aesthetic intelligence strongly visible in partnership. Mars in the seventh can make relationships active, sexual, competitive, conflictual, or energizing. Saturn in the seventh can bring seriousness, commitment, delay, responsibility, or a strong concern with the structure of bonds.

The seventh house is traditionally associated with Venus through Libra, but this should be treated as a symbolic correspondence, not as a rule that every seventh-house topic is Venusian. In actual chart reading, the seventh house is defined first by the Descendant sign, its ruler, planets placed there, and aspects to those planets.

Examples

Celebrity examples show that the seventh house includes partners, opponents, clients, and the public other.

Kendrick Lamar portrait

Kendrick Lamar, the rapper known for direct address, community, rivalry, moral pressure, and ambitious public storytelling, has Jupiter almost exactly inside the seventh house. His work finds reach and fulfillment through direct address: rivals, listeners, community, and the person being answered.

Jackie Robinson portrait

Jackie Robinson, the baseball pioneer known for courage, hostility faced directly, civil-rights symbolism, and public confrontation, has Mars in Pisces in the seventh house. This is a strong example of the seventh as opponents: his life put courage, conflict, hostility, and direct confrontation in the face-to-face arena.

Joe Biden portrait

Joe Biden, the U.S. president known for institutional negotiation, alliances, opponents, and a long public career, has Saturn in Gemini in the seventh house. A long career in negotiation, alliances, opponents, and institutional partnership makes the serious side of this house easy to understand.
