The 12 Astrological Signs: the Primordial Energies

Signs are the energy essence of astrology. A planet describes a function of the person: ego, emotion, intellect, desire, action, discipline, dream, crisis instinct, and so on. The sign describes the style, tone, and instinctive color through which that function expresses itself.

This is why a chart is not reduced to the Sun sign. The Sun sign matters because the Sun describes identity, ego, vitality, and the direction of the self. But Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Moon, the Rising sign, and the dominant planets may emphasize other signs just as strongly. A person called "Libra" can still have a very Capricorn, Scorpio, or Pisces chart if several important planets gather there.

When reading signs, look for concentration. A stellium, meaning three or more planets in the same sign, makes that sign much more important. If those planets are close to the Rising sign or Midheaven, the sign can become visible from outside through posture, voice, image, role, career, reputation, and first impression.
