The Astrological Houses: Areas of Life in the Birth Chart

Houses are one of the four main components of chart reading, along with planets, signs, and aspects. Planets describe functions, signs describe styles, aspects describe relationships between functions, and houses describe where those functions become active in concrete life.

A house is not a personality trait by itself. It is a field of experience: body, money, speech, home, pleasure, work, partnership, sexuality, belief, career, friendship, ideology, retreat. A planet placed in a house tends to express its function through that field. The sign on the cusp of the house describes the manner in which the field is approached, and the ruler of that sign shows how the house is connected to the rest of the chart.

The houses depend strongly on the birth time and place. This is why the Rising sign, Midheaven, and house positions should be read with caution when the recorded birth time is unknown or approximate. Without a known or precise birth time, signs and aspects remain useful, but house interpretation becomes much less precise.

The twelve houses

• First house: Rising sign, body, first impression, and direct self-expression.
• Second house: money, possessions, skills, and tangible personal power.
• Third house: speech, learning, siblings, local movement, and everyday perception.
• Fourth house: home, family, roots, memory, and private foundations.
• Fifth house: creation, pleasure, romance, children, play, and personal radiance.
• Sixth house: work, health, habits, service, technique, and daily adjustment.
• Seventh house: partnership, marriage, contracts, negotiation, and the face-to-face other.
• Eighth house: sexuality, intimacy, shared resources, debt, inheritance, crisis, and social power.
• Ninth house: belief, philosophy, law, travel, teaching, and the search for meaning.
• Tenth house: career, authority, public image, responsibility, and social direction.
• Eleventh house: friendships, networks, groups, ideas, ideologies, political beliefs, and collective projects.
• Twelfth house: retreat, contemplation, long time, institutions, confinement, and perspective.

The four angles of the chart

The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are the angular houses, or cardinal points of the chart. They correspond to the Rising sign, IC, Descendant, and Midheaven. Planets close to these houses or angles are often called dominant planets: not because they explain everything, but because they tend to be perceived from outside. They can show through the body, family position, relationships, public role, reputation, and the way a person enters situations.

The 1st house is especially important because it contains the Rising sign. It often describes the first impression others receive, the instinctive style of presentation, and the immediate way the person meets life.

The six house axes

• 1st and 7th houses: self and other, body and partner, initiative and response.
• 2nd and 8th houses: personal resources and shared power, tangible means and invisible bonds.
• 3rd and 9th houses: local knowledge and worldview, daily language and larger meaning.
• 4th and 10th houses: private roots and public role, origin and direction.
• 5th and 11th houses: personal creation and collective participation, pleasure and group ideologies.
• 6th and 12th houses: daily maintenance and long retreat, practical order and distance.
