A planetary return happens when a moving planet comes back to the same zodiac degree it occupied at birth. Astrologers cast a chart for that exact moment to study a cycle that starts from that return. It is not a replacement for the birth chart; it is a temporary chart read beside the natal chart.
Arcadia gives special importance to the solar return and the lunar return because they are clear, practical cycles. The solar return describes the year between two birthdays. The lunar return describes the roughly 28-day cycle that begins when the Moon returns to its natal position.
The solar return is calculated when the Sun returns to the exact position it had at birth. This usually happens around the birthday, but not always at the same clock time. The chart drawn for that moment gives a symbolic picture of the year: what becomes visible, what asks for effort, where the person is likely to concentrate attention, and which themes repeat until the next birthday.
In a solar return, start with the Rising sign, Midheaven, dominant planets, and the houses that receive many planets. A solar return with strong 10th-house emphasis may describe a year focused on work, reputation, and public direction. A strong 4th house may bring home, family, roots, and private foundations to the front. A strong Mars may make the year more active, competitive, or confrontational; a strong Saturn may make it heavier, more structured, or more demanding.
The important point is to stay concrete. A solar return does not say "this exact event will happen." It says that, for one year, some fields of life and some planetary functions become louder than usual. The natal chart still matters: the return shows a temporary climate, while the birth chart shows the deeper structure.
The lunar return is calculated when the Moon returns to the exact position it had at birth. Because the Moon moves quickly, this happens about once every lunar month. The lunar return is useful for shorter rhythms: mood, home life, daily priorities, emotional pressure, and the way the month feels from the inside.
Read the lunar return with lighter expectations than the solar return. It is not the whole year; it is a monthly weather map. If the Moon, Rising sign, or angular houses are very active, the month may feel more personal and reactive. If Mercury is strong, the period may be full of messages, planning, writing, or decisions. If Venus is strong, relationships, pleasure, taste, and social life may become easier to notice.
Some astrologers also study Venus returns, Mars returns, Jupiter returns, and other planetary revolutions. These can be meaningful in specialized practice: Jupiter can describe a roughly 12-year expansion cycle.
Arcadia does not currently build its reading system around those other returns. The focus is on solar and lunar returns because they are the most directly useful for yearly and monthly interpretation, and because they connect naturally with the birth chart and the date explorer.
Use returns to ask better questions. What area of life is emphasized? Which planet is dominant? Are the same themes already visible in the natal chart? Is the return describing a public year, a private year, a relationship year, a work year, or a month of adjustment?
This keeps the method practical. A return is not a verdict; it is a symbolic chart for a limited cycle. It helps you prepare, compare, and observe the timing of a life without turning astrology into a rigid script.
