The Black Moon, or Lilith, is an astrological position in the sky defined by the location of the second focus of the lunar orbit's ellipse (the first focus being the Earth) or, equivalently, by the apogee of the ellipse. It is associated with a sense of the absolute and the ideal within an individual, a quest for meaning, an ultimate demand, a rejection of compromise and social norms, personal fascination, and even a form of personal genius interpreted by some as a remnant from a past life. It is a so-called "fictional" point in the sky because no physical body resides there, but it wields considerable influence in the interpretation of individual astrological charts.
In an individual's birth chart, the position of Lilith defines a profound ideal within the self, a part of one's being associated with a search for the absolute, perfection, and authenticity. The Black Moon is linked to an intuitive vision of a form of "Truth" in a particular domain related to the sign or house where it resides. For instance, individuals with Lilith in Scorpio will have a pure Scorpio ideal, leading to an interest in areas related to secrets, hidden things, power dynamics, human psychology, sexuality, or the occult. These individuals may feel an intuitive knowledge of these subjects, some even saying it feels as if they've explored them in a past life, and they may exhibit ambivalence that results in either fascination or complete rejection of these themes, seen as unworthy or inherently imperfect according to their ideal. The aspects between Lilith and other planets are crucial in an individual's birth chart and describe how this personal absolute is expressed in harmony or discord with the other planets. When Lilith harmonizes with other planets, their qualities serve the individual's quest for authentic and personal meaning, and those planets, in turn, benefit from Lilith's unwavering and absolutist energy, bringing a unique intensity and authenticity to their expression. Conversely, when Lilith is in disharmony with other planets, conflicts can arise between the desire for perfection and the expression of those planets. This can manifest as rebellion against social norms and constraints, a feeling of never living up to one's ideals, overly "theoretical" or "ideological" approaches, or a tendency to escape or reject embodiment. It can also lead to excessive conformity and submission to external influences, an exaggerated sense of possessing "The Truth," or an inclination to compromise too much.
The house in which Lilith resides describes the life domain where the individual associates their values of authenticity, the quest for perfection, and the rejection of compromise, and where Lilith will predominantly manifest. For example, if Lilith is in the fifth house, it indicates that the person links these values to creativity, personal expression, hobbies, and children, which may lead to a particular demand or quest for meaning in these areas or, conversely, a rejection of leisure and/or parenthood as imperfect compared to the deep ideal. If Lilith is in the tenth house, the individual associates these values with the career and social status domain. This can lead them to seek a unique sense of purpose through their career while rejecting purely "financial" or "mundane" aspects. They may also be perceived as demanding individuals with tendencies toward ideology or absolutism in a social context.
